New Year’s Resolution #4: Earn More

Over the past weeks we have been examining some of the key money goals that you should have on your 2015 resolution list. If you really want to avoid the disappointing results of past years, then you must understand exactly what is required to put you on a positive financial path.

One problem that can be very frustrating for persons who want to achieve their financial objectives is that they just don’t have enough income to do everything they would like to. As the saying goes, “It takes cash to care;” and to attain many of your goals, you need to have excess funds on hand.

More money is essential

The reality is that many people do not have enough money left over after paying their regular bills to comfortably attain many of the objectives and acquisitions that they desire. It may be almost impossible for you to live out your lofty dreams, solely on the proceeds of a regular pay cheque.

Therefore, a critical part of your game plan to have a better financial year is to look at options to increase your earning ability. Without additional sources of income, you will be challenged in your quest to manage your budget, avoid burdensome debt, and save towards building your wealth. Twenty-Day Money Challenge

As the year winds down to a close, this is a good time to reflect on the items on your ‘must-do-in-2014’ list which you may not have accomplished as yet. Although we are heading into the busy holiday season, you still have a few weeks to try to clear up some of your important, unfinished business.

As you may have discovered, making plans and executing them are vastly different undertakings. It is easier to write down what you would like to get done, than to actually do the steps required to carry out your goals. Procrastination, doubt and indecision are usually the main causes of this failure to finish.

Instead of giving up and declaring that it’s too late, aim to make the last twenty days of the year really count. Let’s look at some strategies that can help you to refocus and re-energise yourself, and get moving on this year-end goal challenge which will allow you to head into 2015 on the right footing. Knock Until Doors Are Opened

“For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” – Matthew 7:8

Recently, in a crowded supermarket checkout lane, I viewed the trolley in front of me with dismay. It was loaded with groceries for someone’s month-end shopping trip. I didn’t look forward to being stuck for a long time in the supermarket; I was tired and ready to go home.

Although I had more than a handful of items in my own cart, I decided that I had nothing to lose by politely asking the lady in front if she would allow me to cash my goods ahead of her. I don’t normally like to inconvenience someone else who might be in a hurry to leave as well, but it was worth a try.

Happily, the lady was quite gracious in giving me her space. She even offered another person who was behind me the opportunity to exit faster as well. As I gratefully completed my transaction, I thought how often we miss opportunities to get ahead in life, simply because we fail to ask for what we need. Getting Something for Nothing

Recently, I received an email advising me that an organisation had recovered funds that they believed had been diverted from my account. If I was willing to confirm my bank records, then I could benefit from the restitution of part of the over US$9 million in stolen assets that they claimed to have identified.

My first reaction to the outrageous email was to laugh heartily, as I wished that my net worth could justify my inclusion in their list of wealthy persons with diverted funds. Then, I thought that there had to be many people who would respond to the spurious message, knowing that they really didn’t qualify.

I believe that scam artists continue to create these fraudulent emails because there are lots of people who regularly fall victim to their improbable stories. If criminals had no success in trying to get persons to reveal their banking information, then they would have stopped trying this method a long time ago. Fortune Favours the Bold

Racquel was finally convinced that now was the right time for her to package her banana bread and try to market it commercially. If she had received J$100 every time she had heard, “Why don’t you sell this in the supermarkets? It tastes great!” she would be a wealthy woman today.

Apart from the fact that she was curious to know if her grand-aunt’s tasty recipe could make her some money, she knew that she needed to have a Plan B for creating income. Her employer’s business was struggling and she knew that it was only a matter of time before he started laying off staff.

Racquel had already registered a business name with the Companies Office and had hired a graphic artist to design a logo. She had made a list of potential outlets and had some ideas on how to market her product on social media. There was just one thing stopping her from proceeding – she was scared. Financial Fears

Fear has been described in the acronym False Evidence Appearing Real, indicating that very often the thing you fear is not factual, but just based on some perception in your mind. Sometimes you may even be embarrassed about some of the strange thoughts that secretly cause you to be fearful.

Fears about money can leave you feeling vaguely uncomfortable about your finances, intensely anxious about your future prospects, or send you into full-blown panic mode. Even if your fears may be irrational they can cripple you mentally and physically and prevent you from actualising your goals.

Many financial anxieties may stem from your concerns about losing something important that money can provide, while certain types of financial mistakes can be serious enough to warrant extreme distress. Let’s look at some common financial fears and simple strategies which can help you to deal with them. Continue reading Financial Fears

Financial Frustrations

If you like to follow the progress of persons who are top achievers in the entertainment or business world, you may marvel at their fabulous lives that most of us can only fantasise about. Whether it’s Beyonce or Buffett, you might secretly envy their ability to accomplish their wildest dreams.

Most stories about the rich and famous usually show these persons enjoying the trappings of wealth, but they hardly ever give the background of what they had to endure to reach where they are today. The end result is celebrated, while the journey with its challenges and obstacles is often ignored.

When asked to share their road to success, many notable persons will reveal that they had to endure tremendous difficulties before they started seeing any results from their efforts. One common trait of those persons who make it big is a determined persistence to keep going despite their frustrations. Continue reading Financial Frustrations

Money Mission: Count Your Blessings

All too soon, we have come to the final month in 2013. Over the year, our ‘money mission’ columns have tried to keep you on target with your goals; encouraging you to carry out specific objectives to further your plans, and giving you strategies to overcome obstacles that can hinder your progress.

We’ve covered diverse topics such as overcoming disappointments, earning independent income, looking for opportunities in change, and discovering your motivating force. We’ve also shown you how to focus on a priority goal, get organised, control your time and complete your tasks.

Rest, reflect and review

Although December is usually consumed with thoughts of shopping and revelry, for this month, we invite you to spend some time in reflection. Consider the financial successes that you have enjoyed, as well the money mistakes you have made. What lessons have you learned from them? Continue reading Money Mission: Count Your Blessings

What is Your Work Really Worth?

Our focus for this month is all about finding extra income sources that will give you the ability to save towards your financial goals. It’s not enough to just have a clear and specific dream that you are passionate about; you also need to identify exactly where and how you are going to create additional income to invest in your plans.

Last week we set a challenge that was especially directed at employees and anyone who believes that a job is the only way that they can earn. Your mission is to find a product or service that creates values for customers, and offer it to your friends, family and colleagues for profit. The objective is for you to get accustomed to making money from your own efforts.

With the current economic challenges, most people have few opportunities to increase their on-the-job income. Those who are fortunate to get a raise or bonus will find that inflation eventually eats away at the extra earnings they make. If you are determined to have enough money to improve your standard of living and attain your dreams, then you need to look within. Continue reading What is Your Work Really Worth?

More Money: The Internet Is The Key

How did a 24-year-old security guard change his financial situation by learning the secrets of making money on the internet? When I first heard Ricardo German give his testimony at an internet marketing seminar earlier in 2012, I was inspired by this young man who eagerly embraced the income opportunities available on the World Wide Web.

For years I have been encouraging persons to search online for solutions to earn extra money. You don’t need a lot of capital to get started, nor do you require specialized training to succeed. The world of online marketing is open to persons who are willing to learn new methods of earning, and are determined to keep trying until they achieve their objectives.

After his impromptu talk at the seminar, I followed up with Ricardo to discover more about his motivating story. He shared with me a classic account of how someone can have his or her dreams fulfilled, with the right attitude and actions.

Hopefully his words will encourage you to believe that, in spite your current challenges, you do have the power to change your destiny. Continue reading More Money: The Internet Is The Key
